Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance in a 3-1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday, marking a return to form after a tough stretch. The victory ended a five-game winless streak in the Premier League, with Chelsea taking control in the second half after a late first-half equaliser from Wolves. Tosin Adarabioyo had given the hosts the lead before Matt Doherty’s goal for Wolves leveled the score. However, Marc Cucurella and Noni Madueke netted in the second half to secure the win.
Maresca praised his players' response after Wolves’ equaliser, acknowledging the team’s struggle in the final minutes of the first half, which had led to a drop in confidence. He highlighted that Chelsea’s ability to regain composure after a tough period was key to their success in the second half. "We reacted well in the second half," Maresca said, emphasizing that after five games without a win, it was crucial to break the winless streak and take the three points.
With the victory, Chelsea climbed to fourth place in the Premier League standings with 40 points, just four points behind third-place Nottingham Forest and second-place Arsenal. Maresca also addressed concerns about his team’s defensive record, defending Chelsea’s balance between attack and defense, despite conceding 27 goals so far in the league. He pointed out that only a few teams have conceded fewer goals, suggesting that defensive issues were not the primary factor in their current position.
The Italian manager also defended goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, who had been at fault for Wolves’ equaliser after mishandling a corner. Maresca reassured the Spaniard, stating that mistakes are part of the game and commended Sanchez for his many contributions to the team’s successes. "Robert has saved us many times, it happens, no problem," Maresca concluded.
