New Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca expressed confidence on Wednesday that there will be "no problems at all" when Argentina's Enzo Fernandez rejoins the squad before the Premier League season begins. Fernandez has been at the center of controversy following the release of a social media video in which he and his Argentina teammates sang a derogatory chant about the French national team, celebrating their Copa America victory in July. The chant, which includes racist and homophobic remarks, specifically targets France's star striker, Kylian Mbappe.
Following the incident, Fernandez issued an apology, but both FIFA and Chelsea are currently investigating the matter. France and Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana took to social media to denounce the video, calling it "uninhibited racism." Despite the backlash, Fernandez is on vacation after international duty and is expected to rejoin Chelsea later this month.
Maresca, speaking during Chelsea's pre-season tour of the United States, downplayed concerns about potential fallout from Fernandez's return. He noted that the player and the club have both issued statements addressing the issue, and he does not anticipate any problems. Maresca emphasized that, ultimately, the players are all human beings and that there is no ill intent involved. He believes the situation has been sufficiently addressed and clarified.
Club captain Reece James also addressed the situation during Wednesday's press conference. He acknowledged the difficulty of the situation but expressed hope that it would not disrupt the team. James mentioned that Fernandez had promptly apologized to the club, his teammates, and those offended. He added that while Fernandez has not yet returned, he is prepared to address any issues that might arise upon his arrival and hopes for a unified approach as the team moves forward.
