Chelsea manager Emma Hayes has expressed confidence in the readiness of Lauren James if she is chosen for England's starting XI in the Women's World Cup final against Spain on Sunday. James, a 21-year-old Chelsea midfielder, had faced a two-game suspension following a red card in the last-16 victory over Nigeria. Manchester United's Ella Toone took James' place in the quarter-final and semi-final matches.
Hayes acknowledged that the England team is well-prepared for any lineup decisions made by manager Sarina Wiegman. She emphasized that James is a remarkable player who will continue contributing both to her club and her country, emphasizing that James will learn from her experiences and move forward.
During her first major tournament, James has made a significant impact, registering three goals and three assists in three appearances. Toone, who played as a starter in England's first group game, scored a crucial goal in the quarter-final, semi-final, and final of the tournament, making her the first English player to achieve this feat in a major tournament.
Hayes emphasized the collaborative nature of the England team and highlighted players stepping up to fill various roles when required. She pointed out that Katie Zelem stepped in for Keira Walsh due to injury and Toone replaced James in the quarter-final match.
Hayes also spoke about the development of female coaches in the game. She emphasized the need for expertise tailored to women's football, stating that women's bodies and the nuances of the women's game must be understood. Hayes advocated for more experts in women's football research, training, and performance, emphasizing the importance of developing an industry focused on enhancing the understanding and support of women in the sport.
