Chelsea faces squad reduction and financial fair play challenges
Posted : 27 June 2023
Chelsea, under owner Todd Boehly, is facing the challenge of reducing their bloated and expensive squad while balancing the books to comply with financial fair play rules.
However, they seem to have found a solution through the Saudi wealth fund, which has connections with Boehly and a growing interest in signing Premier League players.
This coincides with Chelsea's need to offload players, and the fund's recent takeovers of major Saudi clubs suggest a deliberate targeting of Chelsea players.
The Saudi wealth fund's relationship with Clearlake, the private equity firm that owns Chelsea, further strengthens the connection between the two parties. Reports suggest that Clearlake manages billions of pounds of assets for the Saudi fund, and Boehly is leveraging this relationship to benefit his club.
As a result, players like Angolo Kante, Kalidou Koulibaly, Hakim Ziyech, Edouard Mendy, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang have either already signed or are expected to join Saudi Arabian clubs.
While the situation could be seen as Saudi Arabia's aggressive pursuit of players to enhance its prestige, there are concerns about the potential impact on the integrity of the game.
The influx of funds from Saudi Arabia raises questions about fair competition and potential violations. Whether this collaboration between Chelsea and the Saudi wealth fund is a convenient coincidence or a breach of ethical boundaries remains a subject of debate.
