Chelsea Ends Winless Run with 3-1 Victory Over Wolves

Posted : 21 January 2025

Chelsea secured a much-needed 3-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers at home on Monday, marking their first Premier League win in six matches. The Blues, who had been in second place just a month ago, moved up to fourth place in the table with goals from defenders Tosin Adarabioyo and Marc Cucurella, along with a third from winger Noni Madueke. The win pushed them above Manchester City and Newcastle United, while Wolves remained out of the relegation zone only on goal difference.

Chelsea took the lead in the 24th minute when Tosin Adarabioyo sidefooted home from close range. However, their advantage was short-lived as Wolves equalized in first-half stoppage time. Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez made an error by dropping a corner, which Matt Doherty capitalized on to level the score. The home crowd feared a repeat of recent matches where Chelsea had squandered leads, but the Blues regained the lead in the second half.

On the hour mark, Marc Cucurella put Chelsea ahead with a well-taken goal after a flick from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall set up a cross from Noni Madueke. Five minutes later, Madueke added a second for Chelsea, nodding in a header from Trevoh Chalobah, who had returned to Stamford Bridge after being recalled from a loan spell at Crystal Palace. Madueke, who initially believed the ball was going over the line, joked that he had to score, even apologizing to Chalobah for taking the goal.

With 40 points from 22 games, Chelsea are now 10 points behind leaders Liverpool and four points adrift of second-placed Arsenal and Nottingham Forest. The Blues are also two points ahead of Manchester City and Newcastle United. Head coach Enzo Maresca was encouraged by the return of club captain Reece James, who made his first start after another injury absence.

Chalobah also provided much-needed defensive stability in the absence of injured players Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile, while Levi Colwill, Romeo Lavia, and Enzo Fernandez were all missing from the squad ahead of Chelsea's upcoming match against Manchester City.
