Chelsea 0-1 Aston Villa: Chelsea's Premier League struggles continue with defeat to Villa
Posted : 24 September 2023
Chelsea's difficult start to the Premier League season continued with a defeat to Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge, adding to their woes as they played with 10 men.
Ollie Watkins scored the decisive goal, firing a precise shot between the legs of Chelsea's goalkeeper, Robert Sanchez, from an incredibly tight angle. Villa capitalized on Malo Gusto's red card for a dangerous tackle on Lucas Digne.
Before Gusto's dismissal, Mauricio Pochettino's Chelsea created numerous scoring opportunities but failed to convert any of them, a recurring theme in their season.
Emiliano Martinez, Villa's goalkeeper, made crucial saves to deny Nicolas Jackson and Raheem Sterling in one-on-one situations, while Enzo Fernandez missed an excellent chance by slicing his shot wide.
Chelsea's goalkeeper, Sanchez, also played a vital role, making impressive fingertip saves to keep out well-struck volleys from Digne and Nicolo Zaniolo. Even after Gusto's red card, both teams had chances, but it was Villa who capitalized, thanks to Watkins.
This victory lifted Villa to sixth place, while Chelsea's goal drought continued, extending to three consecutive games, and they now find themselves in 14th place in the league.
