The contingent from Cape Verde, including the players and officials, arrived in Nigeria on Tuesday for the first leg of the 2024 Women's African Cup of Nations qualifier, which will be played at MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja.
Recall that the Cape Verde women's national team departed from their camp for Nigeria on Monday from their base in Dakar, Senegal, where they had a 4-day camp.
The match against Cape Verde will take place on Thursday, Nov. 30, at MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja.
Cape Verde qualified for the second round of the AWCON qualifiers after defeating Liberia 6-2, with the first leg ending 3-2 in favor of Cape Verde.
Goals from Paulen Agbotsu in the 12th minute, H. Kpan in the 69th minute, while Evy Pereira scored in the 10th minute, with A. Gomes in the 23rd and Kleydiana Borges in the 39th, completed the scoreline.
The islanders narrowly avoided elimination but will be in the draw. In a fierce and intense match, Cape Verde beat Liberia 3-2.
Trailing by 3 goals, the Liberians looked for an early breakthrough but left gaps for their opponents. Facing a faulty defense, Evy Pereira found the net. Agbotsu made up for this setback and leveled the match.
Cape Verde improved their attacking moves, with Gomes and Borges sending the West Africans into orbit. Kpan's late goal did not change the fate of this game.
The Super Falcons, however, reached the second round of the qualifier after they defeated their counterparts from Tanzania.
The Cape Verdean team is expected to be allowed to train at MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja on Wednesday.
The game against Nigeria is slated for the same venue on Thursday.
