Cannavaro ponders: Osimhen or Lukaku for Napoli?

Posted : 16 July 2024

Former Italian international Fabio Cannavaro has sparked debate over a potential transfer saga brewing at Napoli. The center of attention? Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen and his proposed replacement, Belgian powerhouse Romelu Lukaku.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano recently hinted that Napoli might be open to signing Lukaku if Osimhen departs. This speculation has divided fans and pundits alike, prompting Cannavaro, the decorated former defender, to weigh in with his perspective.

Cannavaro, currently manager of Serie A side Udinese, emphasizes the value of continuity within Napoli's attacking setup. He highlights the potent partnership that has blossomed between Osimhen and Georgian winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

"Napoli needs to hold onto both Osimhen and Kvara," Cannavaro stressed. "I studied them closely last year, and they were a real force together."

The 50-year-old manager believes Osimhen possesses a unique edge over Lukaku when it comes to efficiency in front of goal. "Osimhen requires fewer chances to score," he explained. "He's unpredictable, a constant threat to defenses, and doesn't need the same level of service that Lukaku might demand."

Cannavaro acknowledges Lukaku's strengths and the potential tactical fit under manager Antonio Conte, known for his structured approach. However, he suggests that Osimhen's free-flowing style might be a better fit for the current Napoli system.

"Conte excels at positioning players effectively," Cannavaro conceded. "Lukaku could thrive under his system. However, the added value for Napoli is Osimhen's ability to create something out of nothing. He thrives with a bit more freedom."

Meanwhile, rumors persist regarding Paris Saint-Germain's renewed interest in Osimhen. The French giants are reportedly keen on acquiring the Nigerian striker but remain unwilling to meet his hefty €130 million release clause. This financial hurdle could ultimately complicate any potential transfer away from Napoli.

Cannavaro's comments add another layer to the ongoing saga surrounding Osimhen's future. With Napoli facing a crucial decision, his words will undoubtedly resonate with fans and management as they chart the course of their attacking force for the upcoming season.
