Canada win 2-1 against Republic of Ireland, knocking them out of the Women's World Cup

Posted : 26 July 2023
Canada showed resilience as they fought back from a goal down to secure a 2-1 victory against debutants the Republic of Ireland, knocking them out of the Women's World Cup.

The Irish made a stunning start when their captain Katie McCabe scored their first-ever World Cup goal with a superbly taken corner just four minutes into the game.

They continued to create chances against the Olympic champions but were unfortunate to concede an own goal in first-half injury time. Julia Grosso's cross took a deflection off defender Megan Connolly and nestled into the bottom corner amidst torrential conditions.

Adriana Leon gave Canada the lead in the second half, poking the ball into the net eight minutes after the restart. Despite their efforts to equalize, the Republic couldn't find the goal they needed to keep their hopes of progressing alive in Group B.

Playing for pride in their final group match, the Republic will face Nigeria while co-hosts Australia take on Canada. Perth experienced a change in weather, with heavy rain adding to the intensity of the match.

Kyra Carusa caused trouble for the Canadian defenders and forced a double save by Kailen Sheridan early on. McCabe's exquisite corner goal sparked wild celebrations among the Irish supporters who dominated the stadium with their colorful and enthusiastic presence.

Although Canada had their chances, they struggled to convert them into goals in the first half, with defender Vanessa Gilles narrowly missing from a corner. The Republic's goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan was unfortunate to concede the own goal just before halftime.

Despite their first-half domination, the Republic was fortunate to go into the break level, as Gilles headed narrowly wide from another corner. The game was a testament to the competitive spirit of both teams and showcased the determination of the Irish in their first-ever World Cup appearance.
