Canada to play in 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup against Nigeria

Posted : 17 July 2023
Canada, the 2020 Olympic Gold Medal winners in women's football, are poised to make an impact once again at the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup in Australia/New Zealand. They will be competing in their eighth World Cup, commencing their journey on Friday, July 21 against Nigeria at the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium.

As part of Group B, Canada faces co-hosts Australia, newcomers Republic of Ireland, and formidable African team Nigeria. The Canadian team aims to surpass their best performance, a fourth-place finish at the 2003 World Cup in the United States. Their impressive performance in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games established them as one of the significant teams in Concacaf.

At the 2022 Concacaf W Championship, they topped Group B, securing their place in the 2023 World Cup by reaching the final and finishing as runners-up. This result also earned them a spot in the Olympic playoff against Jamaica, providing an opportunity to defend their Olympic title at Paris 2024.

A key figure in the team is the legendary Christine Sinclair, who will make her sixth appearance in a senior World Cup at Australia/New Zealand. Sinclair holds the record for most international goals scored by any male or female player (190) and the most appearances and goals by a Canadian player in a Women's World Cup (21 and 10, respectively).

Another promising player to watch is 22-year-old midfielder Julia Grosso, who has represented Canada at various youth levels. Hailed as the best midfielder in Italy during her time with Juventus, Grosso's talent adds depth to Canada's plan to reach new heights on the international stage.

With their finest squad prepared, the Canadian Women's National Team is eager to showcase why they wear a gold medal around their necks and are determined to continue making football history.
