Former world No. 2 Cameron Smith will compete in the Queensland PGA Championship, a A$250,000 ($169,000) event in his hometown of Brisbane from October 31 to November 3. This tournament, held at Nudgee Golf Club near Brisbane Airport, will serve as Smith's preparation for the Australian PGA Championship, where he aims for redemption after a disappointing performance last year. Smith, who is a two-time winner of the Australian PGA Championship (2017-18), will be joined by current champion Min Woo Lee and former world No. 1 Jason Day, both of whom competed for Australia at the Paris Olympics.
Smith's early exit from the Australian PGA Championship as the defending champion last year left him visibly upset, underscoring his desire to perform well in his home country. The Queensland PGA Championship represents a significant opportunity for Smith to regain his form and build momentum ahead of the Australian PGA Championship at Royal Queensland from November 21-24, where he will be defending his title.
In addition to the Queensland PGA Championship, Smith has also committed to participating in the A$800,000 ($540,000) New South Wales Open from November 14-17. While the local events offer comparatively modest purses compared to the $8 million Smith earned on the LIV tour this year, they provide essential ranking points. Smith, currently ranked world No. 91, will benefit from these points as the LIV tour does not contribute to official world rankings.
Smith expressed his enthusiasm about returning to Queensland, noting the special experience of playing in front of family, friends, and local golf fans. He hopes that his performance at Nudgee Golf Club will set him up for success at Royal Queensland and enable him to reclaim the Joe Kirkwood Cup.
