CAF releases statement on why there was no VAR for the USMA - Rivers game

Posted : 12 April 2024

As the dust continues to settle over the unavailability of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) for the quarter-final match between the Nigerian representatives in the CAF Confederation Cup, Rivers United FC, and USM Alger, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) issued a statement on Thursday regarding the aborted use of the facility.

According to CAF's release, the non-usage of the technology was beyond its control as the equipment arrived late at the venue.

"Due to circumstances beyond CAF’s control, there was no Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology at the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup fixture between USM Alger and Rivers United in Algeria.

For the last few days, CAF has been negotiating with Algerian authorities to release the VAR equipment that has been held by authorities at the entry port in Oran, Algeria.

Regrettably, the VAR equipment was only released at 19:30 on Saturday night, making it impossible to drive the 400km distance between Oran and Algiers and arrive on time for the match," CAF explained.
