Posted : 24 October 2023
CAF and PUMA have introduced "POKOU," the official match ball for the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations Cote d’Ivoire 2023.
This ball is a tribute to Ivorian football legend Laurent Pokou, known for his remarkable performance at the 1970 Africa Cup of Nations, where he scored five goals during the final competition.
The unveiling of the official ball marks a significant milestone in the lead-up to the tournament's official kick-off on January 13, 2024.
Erwan, Laurent Pokou's son, had the honor of presenting this beautifully designed match ball during the Final Draw. The POKOU ball incorporates the three main colors of the Cote d’Ivoire flag – white, orange, and green – while also integrating cutting-edge technology aimed at revolutionizing the game in Africa and beyond.
Laurent Pokou, nicknamed L’homme d’Asmara, is celebrated as one of the greatest players in Ivorian football history. In recognition of his contributions, one of the match venues for the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations Cote d’Ivoire 2023 is named the Laurent Pokou Stadium.
Pokou, who had an illustrious career with ASEC Mimosas and played for French clubs Stade Rennes and Nancy, held the record for the most goals in the Africa Cup of Nations until 2008. His legacy continues to inspire future generations.
The tournament is scheduled to take place from January 13 to February 11, 2024, in various cities across Cote d’Ivoire, including Abidjan, Bouake, Korhogo, San Pedro, and Yamoussoukro.
