The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has delisted the National Stadium Abuja, renamed MKO Abiola Stadium, for hosting the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
Africa Sport Network (ASN) reports that CAF on its official website listed the approved stadiums for its international list, with only Goodswill Akpabio Nest of Champions Stadium making the cut. Recall that Nigeria is in the contest for the AFCON 2024 and has a date ahead of Match Days 5 and 6.
The Super Eagles played their last match of the 2023 African Cup of Nations qualifiers at the MKO Abiola Stadium. In the latest update from the CAF headquarters in Cairo, Egypt, only Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo was approved for Nigeria.
While other stadia that have been previously used by the Super Eagles, like Stephen Keshi Stadium Asaba, Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, and MKO Abiola Stadium, all failed to get approval.
Consequently, the Super Eagles' final group game in the qualifier will now be held at the Godswill Akpabio stadium in Uyo. The Super Eagles have a match away to Sierra Leone in Liberia on Match Day 5.
