CAF Confederation Cup: RS Berkane of Morocco storms Nigeria

Posted : 13 September 2023
Nigeria's representatives at the ongoing CAF Confederation Cup and Bendel Insurance's opponent, the defending champions of the competition, Renaissance Sportive de Berkane of Morocco, are expected to arrive in Nigeria on Thursday ahead of their final qualifying round first leg at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City.

Bendel Insurance is expected to face an uphill task against one of the most successful clubs in the CAF Confederation Cup and two-time champions (2020 and 2022), Renaissance Sportive de Berkane of Morocco.

Although Morocco just last week experienced a major earthquake, Bendel Insurance's foe has put the ugly incident behind them to arrive in Nigeria early enough for the match. En route to the second qualifying match, the Benin Arsenals defeated ASO Chlef on penalties following a 1-1 aggregate over the two legs, with the win at Stade Mabrouki Salem in Algiers.

The Monday Odigie-tutored side must target a big win to make the reverse game at Stade Municipal de Berkane on September 29 less difficult. Renaissance Sportive de Berkane of Morocco, founded in 1938, has been successful in the local league in Morocco as well as CAF-organized competitions since gaining promotion to the Moroccan elite division after finishing in second place in the Botola 2 in the 2011–12 season.

In domestic football, the club has won three Moroccan Throne Cups, two CAF Confederation Cup titles, and one CAF Super Cup title in international competitions. RS Berkane are also one of the most successful Moroccan clubs of the 21st century and the third most crowned Moroccan club in Africa, with three titles in official competitions.

They are fondly remembered for eliminating Kwara United at an early stage en route to winning the 2022 edition. After losing 3-1 to the Afonja Warriors in the first leg at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena on October 9, they won the second leg 2-0 at home a week later to progress to the next round.

Against insurance, RS Berkane will draw inspiration from the fact Moroccan clubs have dominated the Confederation Cup, with Raja Casablanca also successful twice and FAR Rabat, FUS Rabat, and Maghreb Fes successful once each since its 2004 launch.
