Nigeria’s only representatives on the continent, Rivers United, got off to an impressive start in Group C of the CAF Confederation Cup after thrashing visiting Academica Petroleos Clube do Lobito of Angola 3-0 on Sunday evening at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.
The Pride of Rivers didn’t take too long to open the scoring, as Samuel Adom Antwi found the back of the net in the third minute of play, following a brilliant assist from Alex Oyowah.
Just a few minutes later, the visitors thought they had equalized, only for the goal to be flagged for offside.
Paul Odeh doubled the lead for the home side just two minutes into the second half.
After the second goal, APC Lobito failed to put up as much of a fight as they did in the first half before Shedrack Aseigbu made it 3-0 in the 61st minute to ensure all three points for Stanley Eguma’s side.
The former Nigeria league champions could’ve had a bigger lead but failed to convert three big chances that came their way.
In the other Group C encounter, Club Africain of Tunisia defeated Ghana’s Dreams FC 2-0 to come second in the group behind table-toppers Rivers United after just one match.
No Nigerian club has won this competition since its inception in 2004.
