The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has blacklisted the home grounds of Nigerian teams set to participate in the 2024/2025 continental football competitions, including the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup, due to their inability to meet required standards.
As a result, only one stadium, the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, met the requirements and has been listed as the venue for continental football action.
Recall that Nigeria will feature four clubs in the continental competitions: the winners of the 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), Rangers International FC, and second-placed Remo Stars FC, who will participate in the CAF Champions League.
Third-placed Enyimba International FC will participate in the CAF Confederation Cup alongside the winners of the 2024 President Federation Cup, El-Kanemi Warriors of Maiduguri.
The home ground of the Flying Antelopes, Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, as well as the home grounds of Remo Stars, Enyimba International FC, and El-Kanemi Warriors, were not listed by CAF.
Thus, Nigeria’s representatives in the CAF Inter-club competitions next season will only use one stadium, the Nest of Champions in Uyo, as it is the only stadium approved for the first and second rounds of the CAFCL/CAFCC preliminary stage in Nigeria.
However, this decision could favor Enugu Rangers in the CAF Champions League, as their Comoros opponent, Zilimadjou, will need to find another stadium outside their country for their home game.
Similarly, El-Kanemi Warriors, who will represent Nigeria in the CAF Confederation Cup, will also play Dadje of Benin Republic outside their country, as all stadiums presented by the Benin club were not approved by CAF.
Enyimba, who were handed a wildcard in the first preliminary round, will also not play in Aba because the Enyimba Stadium did not meet the standard.
This may negatively impact the results of the clubs, as they will have to play their home matches away from home.
