Burnley Defeat Norwich 2-1 to Move Back to the Top of the Championship

Posted : 12 April 2025

Burnley strengthened their push for Premier League promotion with a 2-1 victory over Norwich, moving back to the top of the Championship on Friday. Scott Parker's team extended their unbeaten league run to 29 matches, with first-half goals from Hannibal Mejbri and Jaidon Anthony proving enough to secure the win at Turf Moor.

The Clarets dominated possession early on, and their persistence paid off in the 14th minute when Mejbri converted Josh Cullen's precise free-kick into the penalty area. The Tunisia international kept his composure to calmly slot the ball past Norwich goalkeeper Angus Gunn, marking his first goal for the club. Burnley doubled their lead in the 24th minute when Anthony’s shot from outside the box deflected off Norwich captain Shane Duffy, wrong-footing Gunn for an own goal.

Norwich improved in the second half, and substitute Jack Stacey pulled one back in the 76th minute. The Canaries earned a corner, and Kenny McLean's header was met by Stacey, who was quick to react and scored from close range, reducing the deficit. Despite Norwich’s efforts, Burnley held firm, extending their unbeaten home league run to 21 matches.

With the win, Burnley moved three points clear of second-placed Leeds in the race for automatic promotion, although Leeds could reclaim the top spot if they win their game in hand against Preston on Saturday. Sheffield United, in third place, are five points behind Burnley and will face bottom-of-the-table Plymouth in their next match.
