Bukayo Saka, the talented England international football star of Nigerian descent, is preparing to bid farewell to Lagos, the vibrant city he recently visited.
Arriving at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos on Wednesday, May 31, 2023, the 21-year-old forward embarked on this trip for various reasons, following the conclusion of an eventful 2022/23 Premier League season.
Born to Nigerian immigrants in the United Kingdom, Saka has always been a subject of anticipation in regards to his potential representation of the Super Eagles, Nigeria's national team.
However, he ultimately made the decision to represent England, the country of his birth. Despite this, Saka's connection to his Nigerian roots remains strong, and he chose to pay a visit to Lagos, a city that holds significant meaning to him.
Expressing his gratitude and bidding farewell to Lagos, Saka took to his official Instagram account, where he posted a video documenting his time in the city.
Alongside the video, he included a message written in Yoruba, a local language, which translates to "E se gan," meaning "Thank you very much" in English.
This was not the first time Saka used Yoruba captions in his videos, as he also did so during his visit to Bariga. He further added, "Thank you Lagos! I appreciate all the love you showed me whilst I was here. Until next time…"
During his stay in Lagos, Saka had the opportunity to meet with Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the two-term governor of Lagos State.
As a gesture of appreciation, Saka presented Sanwo-Olu with a jersey before engaging in a meeting with Arsenal fans in Lagos, undoubtedly leaving a lasting impression on the local football community.
In addition to his city explorations, Saka also found time to visit his grandparents in Kwara State, deepening his familial connections and experiencing the warmth of his Nigerian heritage.
Having cherished these precious moments with family and acquaintances, Saka is now expected to conclude his visit and return to Europe to continue his vacation.
The trip to Lagos provided Saka with an opportunity to immerse himself in the rich culture and vibrant football community of Nigeria.
While his decision to represent England remains firm, his time spent in Lagos allowed him to express his gratitude, connect with fans, and strengthen his ties to the country of his ancestors.
As Saka departs from Lagos, he carries with him fond memories, cultural experiences, and a renewed appreciation for his Nigerian heritage.
