Brighton & Hove Albion sign Brazilian Igor Julio for £14.5m

Posted : 26 July 2023
Brighton & Hove Albion have made a significant defensive signing by acquiring Brazilian centre-back Igor Julio from Fiorentina for £14.5m (17m euros). The 25-year-old has agreed to a four-year contract with the Seagulls, bolstering their backline for the upcoming season.

Manager Roberto de Zerbi expressed his satisfaction with the addition, highlighting Igor's importance in a crucial position within the team, where the play starts. Brighton's pursuit of Chelsea's England Under-21 international Levi Colwill ended due to the high price tag, leading them to secure the services of Igor Julio.

Igor brings valuable European experience to the Amex Stadium, having spent three years at Fiorentina. He joined the Italian side in January 2020 from SPAL and made 110 appearances for the Serie A club. His presence in Fiorentina's journey to the Europa Conference League final, where they faced defeat against West Ham, showcased his talent on a bigger stage.

The Brazilian defender began his career with Red Bull Salzburg in the Austrian Bundesliga before moving to Italy. Despite not having won an international cap yet, Igor's performances have caught the attention of Brighton, who are eager to strengthen their squad for the upcoming season.

While his abilities on the field are impressive, Igor has had some disciplinary issues during the last campaign, accumulating 12 yellow cards and two red cards in 45 matches. Nonetheless, Brighton remains confident in his potential to make a positive impact and contribute to their ambitions in the Premier League.

Igor is the latest addition to Brighton's squad, following the signings of forward Joao Pedro from Watford for just under £30m and goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen from Anderlecht for £16.3m. Additionally, midfielders James Milner and Mahmoud Dahoud have also joined the club on free transfers, further strengthening Brighton's roster for the upcoming season.
