Brighton & Hove Albion 3-1 Southampton: Brighton secured European football for the first time in their history
Posted : 21 May 2023
As Brighton defeated Southampton in the Premier League to earn their first-ever trip to the European Championship, Evan Ferguson scored twice in the opening period.
The 18-year-old attacker gave the Seagulls a 1-0 lead with a strong low shot that went past Saints goalkeeper Alex McCarthy before doubling their lead with a first-time finish from within the box.
When Pascal Gross added a third goal to secure the win for the hosts, Mohamed Elyounoussi's looping header briefly gave the visitors hope of a comeback.
Due to their better goal differential over Aston Villa, who are currently in seventh place, Brighton tightened their hold on sixth place in the standings and are now very certain to make it to the Europa League for the upcoming season.
Sixth place will be assured with a point from their next two games, although a win over.
