According to renowned transfer market specialist Fabrizio Romano, Brighton & Hove Albion's quest for a left-sided central defender has received an important update.
Romano suggests that Chelsea's Levi Colwill, a defender who recently won the European U21 Championship, and Ajax Amsterdam star Calvin Bassey are the top targets on Brighton's wishlist for the position.
It remains unclear which of the two players Brighton is prioritizing, as Romano's update does not provide a definitive answer.
However, Brighton faces complications in their pursuit of Colwill, as Chelsea has made it clear that the 20-year-old is not for sale.
Additionally, Liverpool has shown interest in acquiring his services, further intensifying the competition for his signature.
Consequently, Bassey may emerge as the more realistic option for Brighton to fill the left-sided centre-back role.
Bassey, who previously attracted interest from Brighton before his move to Ajax Amsterdam, has remained on their radar ever since.
While discussing the matter on his YouTube channel, Romano mentioned, "There is strong interest from Brighton. He's in the list, top of the list Levi Colwill but together with Calvin Bassey."
Meanwhile, Bassey reported for pre-season training with Ajax Amsterdam on Wednesday, despite speculation surrounding his potential departure from the Eredivisie club.
Last summer, Bassey became the most expensive Nigerian defender in history when he joined Ajax from Glasgow Rangers.
