Brighton Ends Winless Streak with 2-0 Victory Over Ipswich

Posted : 17 January 2025

Brighton & Hove Albion secured a much-needed 2-0 victory over Ipswich Town at Portman Road, ending their eight-match winless run in the Premier League. Kaoru Mitoma and Georginio Rutter were the goalscorers for Brighton, lifting them to ninth place in the standings with 31 points, while Ipswich dropped to 17th, slipping into the relegation zone behind Wolverhampton Wanderers on goal difference.

Ipswich started the game brightly despite Brighton controlling much of the possession. Nathan Broadhead created the first significant opportunity for the hosts with a long-range shot, but Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen was quick to react and parried it behind for a corner. Just five minutes later, Liam Delap tried his luck from a similar position, but Verbruggen once again proved to be up to the task.

Ipswich continued to apply pressure, with midfielder Omari Hutchinson forcing another save from Verbruggen just before halftime. In the 57th minute, Wes Burns came close to putting the home side ahead, firing just wide after a well-executed long throw-in. However, Ipswich’s inability to capitalize on these chances proved costly when Mitoma opened the scoring two minutes later, after a well-placed pass from Matt O’Riley.

Brighton sealed the win in the 82nd minute when substitute Georginio Rutter netted from close range. Ipswich goalkeeper Christian Walton had denied Joao Pedro earlier with a superb save, but Rutter’s strike ensured Brighton's long-awaited victory, earning them all three points and ending their winless streak.
