Brighton demolishes Sheffield United 5-0, deepening Blades' relegation woes

Posted : 18 February 2024

Brighton dealt a severe blow to Sheffield United's survival hopes in the Premier League with a convincing 5-0 victory at Bramall Lane. The match took a turn for the worse for the home side when Mason Holgate received a red card early in the first half for a reckless challenge on Kaoru Mitoma.

Brighton capitalized on the numerical advantage, as Facundo Buonanotte and Danny Welbeck scored in quick succession. The Blades' miseries continued with Jack Robinson's own goal and Simon Adingra's late brace, leaving them seven points adrift from safety.

The turning point occurred in the 13th minute when Holgate's high challenge led to Mitoma's injury, resulting in his dismissal after VAR review. Brighton wasted no time capitalizing on the situation, with Buonanotte scoring from a disputed corner, followed by Welbeck's close-range strike four minutes later.

Despite Sheffield United's complaints about the corner decision, Brighton took control of the game. The Blades' frustration grew as a VAR decision disallowed Ben Osborn's close-range volley due to a tight offside call against the defender.

Brighton sealed their dominance in the 75th minute when Robinson inadvertently turned Mitoma's cross into his own net. Adingra compounded Sheffield United's misery with a clinical volley in the 78th minute, and his deflected effort in the 85th minute further emphasized their capitulation.

The defeat leaves Chris Wilder's side in a perilous position, seven points away from safety with 13 games remaining. The Blades' defensive struggles continue, having conceded a record 65 goals in the Premier League this season.
