Bright Osayi Samuel Football tourney gets July 30th kick off date

The Edo State Football Association, organizers of the maiden edition of the Bright Osayi Samuel U-13 Football Tournament, has scheduled July 11th, 2024 for the press briefing and presentation of trophies and other items.


The Edo FA chairman, Fred Newton Erhunmwunse, further stated that the tournament would run from July 30th to the end of August in Benin City, with 64 teams from across the three senatorial districts of Edo State participating.


"We are set for the maiden edition of the Bright Osayi Samuel Football Tournament for U-13 boys in the state, but we shall begin with the press briefing, presentation of the trophy, and other items, followed by a media parley with the organizers (Edo FA) and the cup donor/sponsor.


"Stakeholders of the game and sports journalists from across Nigeria will be here for the event.


"The organizers and the participating teams are waiting for the tournament to begin," the Edo FA boss said.


The Nigeria Super Eagles and Fenerbahce of Turkey star Samuel Osayi was in Benin City in early June 2024 with his parents and met with Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki and former Nigeria President Goodluck Jonathan, who was in Benin City beforehand.


The young, talented Nigeria international, who said he was delighted to return to his roots during his visit to Benin City years after he cut his teeth playing street football in the U.K. at age 11.


He said he was giving back to society through the tournament and that it will be an annual event.


He added that the tournament was aimed at catching them young, nurturing, and developing them for future challenges.


Bright Osayi Samuel, who is from Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State, has promised the organizers his full support to ensure the kids get the best from the tournament.


Meanwhile, the Edo State Football Association chairman, Fred Newton Erhunmwunse, said there were lots of gift items for the winners, such as winning prizes, trophies, medals, individual awards for best coach, best goalkeeper, fair play team, and many others.
