Brentford stun wasteful Chelsea in West London derby
Posted : 28 October 2023
Brentford secured their third Premier League victory of the season in a thrilling West London derby at Stamford Bridge, as they overcame Chelsea's wastefulness. Despite Chelsea's dominance with 17 shots compared to Brentford's seven, the visitors capitalized on their opportunities.
Ethan Pinnock opened the scoring with a powerful header from Bryan Mbeumo's precise cross. In the dying moments, with Chelsea's goalkeeper up for a corner, Brentford's Neal Maupay initiated a counter-attack that led to Mbeumo netting the second goal. Chelsea's erratic finishing led to their ninth home defeat of the year, as they squandered multiple chances.
Brentford goalkeeper Mark Flekken had a relatively quiet game, while the Brentford defense held firm and capitalized on quick breaks. This victory propelled Brentford to 10th place in the Premier League standings, one point ahead of Chelsea. Notably, Brentford has won all three of their Premier League visits to Stamford Bridge, showcasing their ability to compete against top-flight teams.
Chelsea's early promise, with Noni Madueke striking the woodwork, soon gave way to inefficiency. Despite creating opportunities, Chelsea struggled to find the target in the second half. Their home form has been less than stellar, having won only two home league matches since February. Mauricio Pochettino's Chelsea faces a challenging period, and they will need to improve their finishing and organization to get back on track. Chelsea's next challenge is a Carabao Cup clash against Blackburn, while Brentford is set to face West Ham in the Premier League next Saturday.
