Brentford's Thomas Frank discloses true reason behind Frank Onyeka's departure

Posted : 02 September 2024

Brentford’s head coach, Thomas Frank, has shed light on the recent departure of Nigerian midfielder Frank Onyeka. According to Frank, Onyeka’s exit from the club was primarily due to limited playing opportunities. Despite his commitment to the team, Onyeka struggled to secure a consistent starting role at Brentford, which influenced his decision to seek a move.

Onyeka has now joined FC Augsburg on a loan deal, completing his transfer just before the closure of the English transfer window. This move to the German Bundesliga presents a fresh chance for Onyeka to showcase his skills and secure a regular starting position, something he found challenging at Brentford.

During his three seasons with Brentford in the Premier League, Onyeka made notable contributions but was unable to establish himself as a permanent fixture in the starting lineup at the Gtech Community Stadium. His search for more consistent game time ultimately led to his departure.

In addressing Onyeka’s departure, Thomas Frank emphasized the midfielder’s desire for more regular playtime. Frank acknowledged Onyeka's significant role in the club's achievements and expressed his respect for the player’s contributions. He noted that this move would provide Onyeka with the opportunity to play regularly, which he had been seeking.

Brentford now faces a challenging season with a reduced squad size. The team’s midfield options have been further limited following Onyeka’s exit. Additionally, with striker Ivan Toney's move to Saudi Arabia and Thiago Rodrigues, his replacement, sidelined with an injury until December, the squad is stretched thin.

Despite these challenges, Brentford has started the 2024-25 Premier League season reasonably well, securing victories in two of their first three matches. Their next test will be a significant one as they prepare to face Manchester City, managed by Pep Guardiola, in their upcoming league fixture.

As Brentford navigates through this season with a thinner squad, the management and fans will be keenly watching how the team adapts and performs in the face of these adversities.
