Brentford Overcome Toney's Absence to Secure 2-1 Victory Over Crystal Palace

Posted : 18 August 2024

Brentford kicked off their Premier League season with a strong 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace, despite the absence of key striker Ivan Toney. Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa scored for Brentford, who chose to leave Toney out amid ongoing speculation about his future, with the England international being pursued by Saudi clubs following his role in England's run to the Euro 2024 final.

Toney, whose contract with Brentford has less than a year remaining, was missed but Brentford manager Thomas Frank had previously shown confidence in the team's ability to perform without him, as demonstrated by their resilience during his betting ban last season. Meanwhile, Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi, despite interest from Newcastle, captained his side and had a moment to forget when Mbeumo scored Brentford's opener after a misjudged defense.

Palace, who ended last season on a high under Oliver Glasner, felt aggrieved not to have earned at least a point. They had a goal by Eberechi Eze disallowed for a dubious foul and saw a second effort by Odsonne Edouard ruled out for a tight offside call. The match took a decisive turn when Brentford's Nathan Collins' shot was parried by Dean Henderson, allowing Wissa to score the crucial second goal.

Despite late pressure from Palace, including two saves by Brentford's Mark Flekken from Eze, the Bees secured the win. As the Premier League action continued, Manchester City began their title defense with a match against Chelsea, marking Enzo Maresca's debut as the Blues' new manager.
