Nigeria on Thursday earned a deserving 3-2 win over the co-host of the 2023 Women World Cup, Australia in the second match of the Group B.
Africa Sport Network (ASN) reports that Nigeria had to stage a comeback after falling behind courtesy the Matilda's Emily Van Egmond stoppage time goal in the 46th minute to gift the hosts a deserving lead after an assist from foord with Nigeria's goalkeeper, Chiamaka Nnadozie who fumbled with the aerial ball.
Nigeria's Uchenna Kanu in quick succession however gave Nigeria a respite going to the tunnel for the second half when she pounced on a loose ball and delivered it into the Matilda's net on the stroke of five minutes added time.
Upon resumption, the Super Falcons had to soak in pressure for the better half of the game until the Coach, Randy Waldrum made two changes to bring Asisat Oshoala in for the goal scorer, Kanu.
The changes gave a quick counter balance as Oshoala quickly delivered a pass to the left flank while it led to a ball lob into the waiting head of Osinachi Ohale, who made an audacious nod and a clash with an Aussie's player.
Spanish giant's, Barcelona Femmine goal sensation and Ballon D'or nominee, Oshoala deservedly put the icing on the cake for Nigeria with a solo effort in the 72nd minute after a defensive error from the backline which gave the goalkeeper a shadow chase only for Oshoala to put the ball into an unmanned net.
Unrelenting Matildas got a consolation goal through Alanna Kennedy in the 90+10 after an unimaginable 11 minutes added time by the center referee.
This had little effect as the Falcons were able to soak the rest of the pressure till the last whistle.
The famous 3-2 win for the Super Falcons means that they now top the table, bagging four points but with superior goal difference to confine Canada to second position who had defeated Ireland 2-1 the previous day.
Talking point is that Nigeria is the first African country to defeat Australia who has never lost any match to any African side having played 11 matches and won 10.
Super Falcons will face already eliminated Republic of Ireland who had lost two successive matches at the ongoing 2023 World Cup on the Monday, July 31.
