Borussia Dortmund Signs Pascal Gross from Brighton for €10 Million

Posted : 01 August 2024

Borussia Dortmund announced on Thursday the signing of Germany midfielder Pascal Gross from Premier League club Brighton & Hove Albion on a two-year contract. Reports from German media suggest that Dortmund paid a fee of up to 10 million euros ($11 million), including potential bonuses, to secure the 33-year-old. Gross, known for his creative midfield play and goal-scoring ability, joins Dortmund after a seven-year tenure with Brighton, having moved there from FC Ingolstadt in 2017.

Gross, who has been a Dortmund fan since childhood, expressed his excitement about joining his new team, stating he "can’t wait to play alongside my new teammates." Dortmund's director, Lars Ricken, praised Gross as a "top performer" who will bring "solidity and flexibility" to the squad. During his time at Brighton, Gross made 228 Premier League appearances, scoring 30 goals and providing 45 assists. He played a key role in helping Brighton qualify for European competition for the first time in the club's history after finishing sixth in the 2022-23 season.

In addition to his club success, Gross was named Brighton's player of the season twice: once in his debut season (2017-18) and again in his final campaign last year. He earned his first call-up to the German national team at age 32 and was included in manager Julian Nagelsmann's 26-man squad for Euro 2024. Gross has earned eight caps and scored once for Germany.

Dortmund's move to sign Gross follows a disappointing domestic season in 2023-24. Although they reached the Champions League final, losing to Real Madrid at Wembley, their league performance fell short, finishing fifth, and they were eliminated in the last 16 of the German Cup. This summer, Dortmund has also strengthened their squad by signing striker Serhou Guirassy and defender Waldemar Anton from Stuttgart, the Bundesliga’s surprise runners-up from last season.
