Borussia Dortmund have dismissed head coach Nuri Sahin following a series of disappointing results, including a 2-1 loss to Bologna in the Champions League on Tuesday. The defeat marked the team's fourth consecutive loss, further deepening their struggles across all competitions.
Dortmund, last season's Champions League finalists, had initially taken the lead but conceded two quick goals in the second half, extending their poor form.
The club, currently in 10th place in the Bundesliga, has also suffered three straight league defeats in 2025, putting their chances of qualifying for next season's Champions League in jeopardy.
In a statement, Dortmund managing director Lars Ricken explained that the decision was made after a comprehensive internal review, acknowledging that the team had lost faith in achieving their goals under Sahin's leadership.
"This decision also hurts me personally," Ricken said, but emphasized that it had become unavoidable after the loss in Bologna.
Sahin, a former Borussia Dortmund player and assistant coach, had only been appointed in the summer of 2024, replacing Edin Terzic. Despite his contract running until 2027, the 36-year-old's tenure has ended after less than half a year.
Dortmund has not yet named a replacement for Sahin but is expected to announce a new interim coach ahead of their upcoming league match against Werder Bremen.
