LOSC Lille head coach, Bruno Genesio, has commended Nigerian striker Chuba Akpom for his performance after finding the net on his Ligue 1 debut against Le Havre. The forward’s goal came as a significant boost following his challenging stint in the Dutch Eredivisie.
The 29-year-old struggled for consistent game time during his spell at Ajax Amsterdam, prompting a move to Lille on loan in the January transfer window. His decision to switch clubs was motivated by the need for more playing opportunities.
Akpom had already made his first appearance for Lille in their Coupe de France clash against Dunkerque, coming off the bench. However, in his first Ligue 1 match, he was introduced in the second half against Le Havre and managed to score in the 97th minute. Despite his late goal, Lille were unable to salvage the match, having already conceded twice.
After the game, Genesio expressed satisfaction with Akpom’s impact as a substitute. However, he emphasized that the striker still needs time to adjust to the tactical and physical demands of French football.
The Lille manager also highlighted the contributions of other players, including Ethan Mbappé, who provided speed and drive, and Ayyoub Bouaddi, who showcased his technical abilities. He acknowledged the challenges of integrating into a team that was already struggling in the match.
Genesio noted that scoring is always a positive sign for a striker, praising Akpom’s ability to capitalize on the opportunity. He stressed that the Nigerian forward must continue adapting to the team’s style of play to maximize his effectiveness.
Lille currently sits in fifth place in the Ligue 1 standings, trailing second-placed Marseille by five points, while Paris Saint-Germain maintains a comfortable 13-point lead at the top of the table. Genesio believes that Akpom’s goal will boost his confidence and add value to the team’s push for a strong finish to the season.
