Super Eagles forward Victor Boniface made a trip to Spain to support his fellow Nigerian, Chidera Ejuke, as Sevilla suffered a 4-1 defeat against Barcelona at the Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán. Boniface was in attendance to witness the match, which saw his compatriot feature as a second-half substitute.
Sevilla hosted Barcelona for their second La Liga meeting of the season on Sunday. The first encounter ended in a heavy 5-0 defeat for Sevilla, marking the game where Ejuke sustained a hamstring injury that sidelined him for months.
Currently, Sevilla has two Nigerian players in their squad, but Akor Adams was unavailable due to injury, while Ejuke started the match on the bench. His team faced an uphill battle against a dominant Barcelona side eager to secure another convincing win.
Before kickoff, Boniface posted a video from the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán stadium. After the match, he also shared a photo alongside Ejuke and their agents. On the pitch, Barcelona took an early lead through Robert Lewandowski in the seventh minute, but Sevilla responded immediately, leveling the score with a goal from Ruben Vargas.
The match remained balanced until halftime, but Barcelona took control after the break. Fermin Lopez and Raphinha found the net within the first ten minutes of the second half, putting the visitors 3-1 ahead. Their dominance was momentarily disrupted when Lopez was shown a red card for a reckless challenge in the 61st minute.
Ejuke was introduced into the match shortly after, replacing Vargas. However, he struggled to make an impact, finding himself on the receiving end of skillful dribbles from Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal and Jules Koundé. Sevilla’s hopes of a comeback faded when Eric Garcia sealed the victory for Barcelona with an 89th-minute goal. Since returning from injury, Ejuke has yet to regain his best form, failing to influence matches as he once did.
Vargas, who started ahead of Ejuke, proved to be a more effective attacking threat for Sevilla. As a result, Ejuke will need to improve quickly if he hopes to convince coach García Pimienta of his worth. If his performances do not improve soon, he risks being relegated to a permanent role on the bench.
