Boniface to return for Leverkusen’s weekend match after absence

Victor Okoh Boniface, the 24-year-old striker for both the Super Eagles and Bayer 04 Leverkusen, is poised to make his return for the team's upcoming match against Union Berlin this Saturday. After an absence, Boniface will be looking to get back to full fitness and contribute to his team's efforts in the Bundesliga.


This season, Boniface’s performance for Leverkusen has been less impressive compared to his debut campaign, where he had an outstanding start. His early success saw him making significant contributions to the team, but various injuries and fitness struggles have hindered his ability to maintain that level of form. 


Yesterday, Boniface missed a training session due to an unspecified illness, according to Werkself Xtra. However, he is expected to be in top physical condition for the match against Union Berlin, with hopes of returning to his best and making an impact on the field once again.


In terms of his statistics this season, Boniface has netted eight goals and provided a solitary assist in 17 matches for Xabi Alonso's side. This is a noticeable decline from his impressive numbers in the previous campaign, where he scored 14 goals and recorded eight assists in 23 appearances.


Leverkusen, as a whole, has experienced a dip in form compared to their remarkable performances last season. The team has been eliminated from the UEFA Champions League and suffered an early exit from the DFB Pokal at the hands of third-tier side Arminia Bielefeld. Despite these setbacks, they are still in the hunt for a top finish in the Bundesliga.


Currently, Leverkusen sits six points behind Bayern Munich, who lead the league. With only six games remaining in the season, the competition is still fierce, and Leverkusen will be looking to capitalize on any potential slip-ups from Bayern Munich to close the gap.


Although Bayern Munich remains active in European competitions, Xabi Alonso’s side will be keen to take advantage of any dropped points by the Bavarians, with the hope of making a push for the Meisterschale. The upcoming match against Union Berlin represents an important opportunity for Leverkusen to regain momentum and close the gap in the title race.
