Beth Mead seeks England return after ACL injury

Posted : 29 August 2023
Arsenal striker Beth Mead is eagerly looking forward to the possibility of returning to the England national team lineup and has her sights set on the upcoming match against Scotland next month.

Mead, 28, was sidelined from the World Cup due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury suffered in November of the previous year. Her absence was a setback, considering her remarkable performance as the top scorer in Euro 2022, which resulted in England's victory. With 29 goals from her 50 international caps, Mead's impact on the team's offensive prowess is undeniable.

Speaking on the BBC Scotland's Behind The Goals podcast, Mead expressed optimism about her injury recovery progress. She mentioned, "Injury-wise, I'm starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. I'm back on the pitch now and waiting to play some minutes which will be brilliant."

England and Scotland are scheduled to begin their Women's Nations League campaigns with a match at Sunderland's Stadium of Light on September 22nd. The group also includes Belgium and Netherlands.

Mead, originally from Whitby, began her football journey with Sunderland before joining Arsenal in 2017. She shared her hopes for her return, saying, "In an ideal world I'd like to be involved, fingers crossed, if everything goes to plan. It's close to home and my old team, so it would be nice and fun for me."

Addressing the challenges of recovering from an ACL injury, Mead highlighted the complexities involved in the process. She indicated that she's been gradually rejoining the Arsenal team's training sessions, focusing on building up her strength and conditioning.

Mead acknowledged that while her physical readiness is on point, the rehabilitation process requires attention to detail. "Strength-wise, I'm in the right place, but then if something is not quite right you've got to tick certain boxes which is the frustrating part. Physically, I feel ready to go, just little strength things will say different." Her determination to return at her best showcases her commitment to both her recovery and contributing to the national team's success.
