Beth Mead returns to England squad after year-long injury layoff

Posted : 21 November 2023
Arsenal forward Beth Mead makes a triumphant return to the England squad after a year-long absence due to an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury suffered in November 2022. Mead, who secured the Golden Boot during England's Euro 2022 victory, has shown promising form since her recovery. Manager Sarina Wiegman expressed delight at Mead's return, emphasizing her good health and positive contributions during recent matches.

The 23-player squad, selected for the upcoming Women's Nations League matches, features Mead as England prepares to face the Netherlands at Wembley and Scotland at Hampden Park. Wiegman highlighted Mead's progress, stating that the forward's health is excellent, and her recent performances have warranted inclusion in the squad. Mead's return to the national team marks a significant milestone in her recovery journey.

The squad also sees call-ups for young talents, including 20-year-old Grace Clinton from Tottenham (on loan from Manchester United) and 19-year-old Manchester City goalkeeper Khiara Keating. However, the absence of Aston Villa defender Lucy Parker, sidelined due to an ankle injury, and the exclusion of players like Jess Park, Ebony Salmon, and Laura Coombs underscore the competition for squad places.

England, representing Team GB, aims to secure qualification for the 2024 Paris Olympics, but they must win their Women's Nations League group, currently standing third, three points behind leaders the Netherlands. The upcoming matches against the Netherlands and Scotland are crucial for their Olympic aspirations.
