Benfica scored late goals to secure a place in the Champions League final

Posted : 21 April 2023
Following Nicolo Barella's exquisite goal, Inter improved their aggregate advantage after taking a 2-0 lead from the first leg in Lisbon, but Fredrik Aursnes' thunderous header gave Benfica hope.

Before Benfica scored two late goals through Antonio Silva and Petar Musa, Argentina's World Cup champion Lautaro Martinez and substitute Joaquin Correa made it 5-1 overall.

Inter has dropped out of the Champions League spots after losing four of their last five Serie A games, but Simone Inzaghi's team can now look forward to two tantalizing matchups versus Milan, who eliminated Napoli on Tuesday, for a spot in the championship game.

"It will be a special derby," said Martinez. "We all know what this game means, to play a Milan derby in the Champions League semi-finals.

"Happiness is the word, I'm so proud to represent this crest and this great club which is back to where it belongs."
Since Eugenio Bersellini in 1980–81, Inzaghi is the first Italian coach to take Inter to the European Cup semifinals, and he claims his squad has nothing to fear from Milan.

"We deserve this semi-final. It was a dream but now we're here and we'll play it big," he added.

The Italian midfielder Barella made it 3-0 overall as Inter appeared to be coasting when he got space for himself inside the box and produced a beautiful curling finish.

However, Benfica would not quit, and with a strong header, Norway midfielder Aursnes preserved the stalemate.

Martinez pushed Federico Dimarco's cross into the goal, but the damage from the previous leg was too much, as Correa scored two minutes after coming on.
Benfica did well to persevere; Silva made it 3-2 on the evening before Musa, a replacement, equalized late in stoppage time.

Nevertheless, it was unable to prevent Inter from securing their spot in the semi-finals for the first time since 2010, when they won the competition under Jose Mourinho.
