Bendel Insurance handed first defeat in 2023/2024 NPFL

Posted : 23 October 2023
Mohammed Babaganaru, the head coach of Gombe United FC, said that the defeat of Bendel Insurance from Benin on Sunday at the Pantami Township Stadium in Gombe was a well-executed plan.

Babaganaru made this statement while addressing the press after the Match Day Four fixture of the 2023/2024 season of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).

He explained that the objective for his team before the match was to prevent Benin Arsenal from repeating last season's unbeaten run after playing in Gombe.

"Last season, we played them in the Super 6, and we had a difficult and disciplined match. We set an objective to beat Insurance and end their unbeaten run, considering what they achieved last season. We prepared our minds, came out forcefully, and achieved it," he said.

He also mentioned that the victory against Insurance served as strong motivation for his team. Babaganaru described his team as a new one with a completely different attitude, character, and approach.

He commended his players, stating that they played better than the previous week in Ilorin, indicating that the team is improving. He expressed optimism that their next match against Plateau United would result in a win for his team.

On the other hand, Monday Odigie, the head coach of Bendel Insurance, described their defeat to Gombe United as a reflection of the nature of football.

He emphasized that he had mixed feelings about the result, pointing out that it's not just about maintaining an unbeaten streak, but about the performance in every game.

He emphasized that every team in the world can experience losses, and what matters is how you perform and strive to improve in each game.

"We didn't come here to lose the game; this wasn't the result we wanted, but that's the nature of football," he concluded.

Gombe United scored their only goal in the 51st minute through Ahmed Jimoto to secure the maximum points in the game.
