Belgium strengthens squad for Nations League playoff match

Posted : 18 March 2025

Belgium has added Ameen Al-Dakhil and Michy Batshuayi to their squad for the upcoming Nations League playoff against Ukraine. This decision comes as coach Rudi Garcia anticipates potential injuries that might cause players to withdraw before the match. The Belgian football association confirmed the call-ups on Tuesday.

Ameen Al-Dakhil, a 22-year-old central defender, has earned six caps for Belgium, including his appearance in the recent game against Israel in November. His consistent performances have made him a reliable addition to the squad, providing cover in defense for the national team.

Michy Batshuayi, a seasoned 32-year-old forward, returns to the national team after being absent for nearly a year. Having been a fixture in the squad for the past decade, Batshuayi’s experience and attacking prowess make him an important player for Belgium as they look to secure their spot in the next stage of the Nations League.

The squad changes were made in anticipation of potential injury setbacks to key players. Malick Fofana, who recently scored for Olympique Lyonnais in Ligue 1, is one of the attackers dealing with injury concerns. His fitness status is critical as Belgium prepares for the playoff match against Ukraine.

Another player facing uncertainty is Arthur Theate, a fullback who was absent for Eintracht Frankfurt in their Bundesliga match on Sunday. His injury could prevent him from being available for the first leg of the Nations League playoff, which will be held in Murcia, Spain, on Thursday.

Belgium will then host the return leg of the playoff in Genk on Sunday. The outcome of these matches will determine whether Belgium can progress in the Nations League, and the team will need all hands on deck to ensure a strong performance.

With these changes and the possibility of further adjustments due to injuries, Belgium’s squad remains dynamic as they approach this crucial playoff against Ukraine. Coach Rudi Garcia will be hoping that his players stay fit and focused as they aim to secure a place in the next round of the competition.
