Belgian club targets Stanley Nwabali following standout performances for Nigeria

Posted : 24 January 2024

Super Eagles and Chippa United goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali, has drawn the attention of a Belgian club after making a significant impact with the Nigerian national team in Ivory Coast.

Nwabali, aged 27, unexpectedly started in Jose Peseiro's first eleven against Equatorial Guinea, replacing Francis Uzoho. Since the opening game in Ivory Coast, Nwabali has secured the goalkeeper position, delivering two clean sheets and crucial saves to bolster the defense.

His standout performances have captured the interest of Union Saint-Gilloise, the former Belgian club of Victor Boniface. Reports from Sun Kickoff indicate that scouts from the Belgian side have been monitoring Nwabali and have been impressed by his consistent displays, including seven clean sheets in the DStv Premiership with Chippa United this season.

With Union's primary goalkeeper, Maxime Wensenns, rumored to be moving to Turkey, a potential transfer for Nwabali may materialize in the near future.

While the sale of Nwabali could benefit Chippa United financially, the South African club faces a challenge as FIFA has imposed a transfer ban, preventing them from signing a replacement for the Nigerian goalkeeper.

Standing at 1.97 meters tall, Nwabali is open to the possibility of a move but remains focused on performing well for the national team. He is expected to continue guarding the goal as Nigeria aims to defeat Cameroon on their way to securing their fourth AFCON trophy in Ivory Coast.
