Bayern's Olise reveals French roots in choosing Les Bleus

Posted : 05 September 2024

Bayern Munich winger Michael Olise is set to potentially secure his future with the French national team on Friday, September 6, as they face Italy in a UEFA Nations League match at the historic Parc des Princes in Paris.

Olise, who was born in London to a Franco-Algerian mother and a Nigerian father, holds eligibility to represent multiple national teams, including Nigeria, England, and Algeria. However, his decision could become permanent when he suits up for France's senior team in the upcoming game.

Having received his first senior call-up, Olise is now part of Didier Deschamps' 23-man squad for the UEFA Nations League, marking a significant step in his international career. He has previously represented France at various youth levels, including U18, U21, and U23.

Despite interest from the Nigeria Football Federation to bring him into the Super Eagles squad, Olise opted to continue his journey with France. The efforts to recruit him for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers ultimately fell short, and a scheduled meeting with Nigerian officials in London never materialized.

Olise’s connection to France is deeply rooted in his upbringing, and at a press conference held at Clairefontaine, he explained his decision to play for Les Bleus. He shared that his mother’s French heritage and his childhood experiences in France played a major role in his choice.

Growing up, Olise idolized French football legends like Zinedine Zidane and Thierry Henry, whose influence further solidified his attachment to the French national team. His admiration for the 1998 World Cup champions left a lasting impression on his football aspirations.

At just 22, Olise has already made his mark on the international stage, delivering a standout performance during the 2024 Olympic Games, where he contributed seven goal involvements (2 goals, 5 assists) to help France secure a silver medal. Now, he looks forward to his future with Les Bleus.
