A major upset occurred in Germany as Bayern Munich was knocked out of the German Cup in the second round, suffering a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Saarbrücken, a team from the third division. Saarbrücken advanced to the quarter-finals at Bayern's expense. The German champions fielded a somewhat secondary lineup, resting most of their star players. Thomas Müller was one of the few regular starters and gave Bayern the lead in the 16th minute. However, Patrick Sonheimer equalized for Saarbrücken with a goal just before halftime.
In the second half, Thomas Tuchel made substitutions, bringing in Musiala, Gnabry, and Koeman, but Bayern couldn't find a way to score, despite numerous attempts, including hitting the woodwork nine times. In contrast, Saarbrücken had only two shots on target and scored on both occasions. Marcel Gauss was the hero for Saarbrücken, scoring the winning goal in extra time, stunning Bayern.
This marked Bayern's second loss of the season, following their defeat to RB Leipzig in the German Super Cup. Meanwhile, Borussia Dortmund secured their spot in the quarter-finals with a 1-0 victory over Hoffenheim, thanks to a goal from Marco Reuss in the 73rd minute.
Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen also advanced with a comfortable 5-2 away win over third-division side Sandhausen.
In the FA League Cup Round of 16 matches, Manchester United suffered another disappointing loss at home. Just days after a 28-0 defeat to Manchester City in the Premier League, they were defeated by Newcastle, mirroring last season's final. Miguel Almiron, Lewis Hall, and Joe Willock scored for Newcastle.
Arsenal was also eliminated, losing 3-1 to West Ham in a London derby. On the other hand, Liverpool reached the quarter-finals with a 2-1 away victory over Bournemouth, while Chelsea and Everton also advanced in the competition.
