Bayern Munich Faces High-Stakes Clash with Benfica

Posted : 06 November 2024

Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany emphasized the urgency his team feels heading into their Champions League clash with Benfica on Wednesday, noting a sense of "drama" after suffering consecutive defeats in the competition. Bayern, who began their European campaign with an emphatic 9-2 victory over Dinamo Zagreb, faced setbacks in their recent matches, losing away games to Aston Villa and Barcelona. These back-to-back losses have placed added pressure on the squad as they seek to climb back up the standings.

Currently, Bayern sit 23rd in the Champions League table under the new format, which is a surprising position for the six-time European champions. With four points separating them from the top eight teams that will secure automatic qualification for the round of 16, Bayern now have little room for error. In this revamped structure, only the top eight teams progress directly, while the next 16 must go through a two-legged play-off round, and the lowest 12 teams are eliminated from the competition.

Kompany, who took over as Bayern’s head coach this season after moving from Burnley, expressed confidence in his squad despite the recent setbacks. He acknowledged the challenging away fixtures they’ve faced, noting that "there's a little bit of drama in it." Kompany highlighted the demanding path ahead, suggesting that reaching the top eight would likely require six victories, while three wins might be enough to secure a playoff spot. Nevertheless, his primary goal remains to guide Bayern into the top eight.

Lisbon native Joao Palhinha, a Bayern midfielder and former player for Benfica’s city rivals Sporting, added that Wednesday’s game would be approached as if it were a final. Palhinha, well-acquainted with the pressures of playing for a major club, stated that such expectations are inherent. Additionally, he extended his best wishes to his former coach Ruben Amorim, who is set to leave Sporting for Manchester United. Palhinha expressed admiration for Amorim, who he described as a valued coach and friend, and wished him success in his new role.
