Bayern Munich has announced the appointment of Max Eberl as their new sporting director, marking a return for the former Bayern player. Eberl's contract, running until June 2027, will see him assume his role on March 1, as confirmed by the club on Monday.
The 50-year-old previously served as the director of sport at Borussia Monchengladbach for an extensive 14-year period before joining RB Leipzig in 2022. However, he was dismissed from his position at Leipzig in September amid reports linking him to Bayern, who are facing challenges in their pursuit of a 12th consecutive Bundesliga title.
Expressing his joy at returning "home" after 30 years, Eberl, set to become the board member for sport, outlined his objectives during a press conference in Munich. With Bayern currently trailing by eight points in the league, Eberl emphasized the goal of maximizing the remainder of the season, acknowledging the unusual position of being in a chasing role. Despite the team's challenges in the Champions League, Eberl remained optimistic about turning the situation around and even potentially securing a title.
As Bayern recently decided to part ways with coach Thomas Tuchel at the end of the season, Eberl addressed the ongoing speculation about the next coach. He stressed the importance of calm discussions in finding the right fit for the club and expressed the need to identify players that align with the chosen coach's philosophy. Eberl affirmed, "For us, it is about finding the right coach for Bayern."
