Bayern Munich, a Threat in Champions League Quarter-Final – Guardiola
Posted : 19 April 2023
The Champions League quarterfinal second leg will take place on Wednesday, and according to Pep Guardiola, Manchester City will take on Bayern Munich with "11 players, not the history."
With City leading by three goals after the first leg, the clubs will face off at the Allianz Arena.
Bayern, who have won the title six times, will still pose a danger at home, according to Guardiola.
"We don't play against what they achieved, but having something like that is something special," he said.
City has yet to win the Champions League after falling to Thomas Tuchel's Chelsea in the final in 2021 and being defeated by an astonishing Real Madrid comeback in the semi-finals of the previous season.
"It's nice to travel around and play these types of opponents, it's nice to be here and try to make an incredible achievement and reach the semi-final again," added Guardiola.
The Spaniard, who steered City to four Premier League championships before taking over as manager of City in 2016, wants his team to "punish" Bayern more for their great first-leg performance in Manchester.
"We must focus on what we have to do to control the game, punish them, come here to win the game in Munich against one of the most historic teams in the competition," he said.
"I've been here in Bayern and I know the mentality of the club. It's in the skin of everyone and I know they believe they can do it. "We believe [we can do it] too. When you are in these types of clubs, where you build the feeling that whatever happens you can do it. They have history in the competition and we are growing in that.
Midfielder Phil Foden's return to exercise with the team on Tuesday after being sidelined following the removal of his appendix last month is encouraging for City.
