The coach of Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) side Bayelsa United, Ladan Bosso, has described his team as young and a work in progress.
Bosso made this statement after watching his team being defeated by Kennedy Boboye's Sunshine Stars of Akure in the 2024/2025 NPFL Match Day 1, held at Otunba Dipo Dina Stadium.
The Sunshine Stars of Akure began their NPFL season with a commanding 3-0 victory over Bayelsa United.
The match, played on Sunday at Dipo Dina Stadium in Ijebu-Ode, saw Sunshine Stars’ forward, Seidu Salisu, score in the 44th minute from a cross by winger Promise Awosanmi, giving the home side a 1-0 lead at halftime.
In the second half, Awosanmi increased the lead to 2-0 with a free kick from the right side of the pitch in the 54th minute.
Substitute Stephen Chuckwudi sealed the victory with a clinical finish in the 90th minute, making it 3-0.
Sunshine Stars’ head coach Boboye expressed satisfaction with the win, despite most of the players being new recruits.
When asked about his goals for the season, Boboye stated that every team manager aims to play continental football. “We are not there yet; we are just trying to implement what we practiced in training sessions. We still have more work to do,” he said.
The Prosperity Boys’ coach, Bosso, noted that while the game has passed, he has identified areas for improvement. He emphasized that 70 percent of the players are newly recruited and will need time to integrate for better results.
