The Honourable Commissioner for Sports Development in Bayelsa State, Daniel Igali, has stated that the state has great intent and ambition as the next National Sports Festival, tagged Ogun 2024, approaches.
Daniel Igali made this revelation during an indoor meeting with the state's association chairmen, coaches, organizing secretaries, and management staff.
He mentioned that the goal of Governor Douye Diri at the Nigerian version of the Olympic Games is to secure first place.
Recall that at the Edo 2020 and Delta 2022 National Sports Festivals, Bayelsa State finished in 3rd and 2nd positions, respectively.
In his remarks, Igali appreciated everyone in the ministry for their commitment, which has enabled the state to reach enviable heights both nationally and globally.
However, Igali noted that the desire of the state governor is for Bayelsa to clinch the number one spot.
"This meeting is about the need for us to prepare adequately for the National Sports Festival coming up in Ogun State early next year.
"Bayelsa State has achieved 2nd and 3rd places, and there’s only one place left, which is to do better than 2nd."
"His Excellency Senator Douye Diri expects nothing less than an improvement on our previous records. Proper planning is essential to achieve this, so the meeting was to interact and acquaint everyone with this objective," Igali noted.
The Director of Sports at Bayelsa Sports Council, Braveman Wodi, also spoke about the need for early preparations, hence the commissioner’s move to meet with key individuals in the council on projections and feasibility.
"You will agree with me that we moved from 3rd to 2nd place in the last two national festivals, and now first place is naturally the target, and that's what we are aiming for."
"The strategy is correct because we have received maximum support from the sports-loving Governor Douye Diri and his deputy, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakp. The meeting with the Honourable Commissioner sends a clear message that we are fine-tuning our common purpose," Braveman said.
The chairman of the Bayelsa State Table Tennis Association, Ama-Ebi Stow, along with other chairmen, stated that the association is ready to make a strong impact at the National Festival, highlighting the significant progress it has made in both national and international events.
