Germany's national football coach, Julian Nagelsmann, announced on Thursday that Oliver Baumann will take the place of the injured Marc-Andre Ter Stegen for the upcoming Nations League matches. Baumann, who plays for Hoffenheim, has been called up to the squad as Germany prepares for a match against Bosnia and Herzegovina on October 11, followed by a home game against the Netherlands on October 14. This marks a significant opportunity for Baumann, especially with the retirement of long-time goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.
Nagelsmann also welcomed back Serge Gnabry and Antonio Rüdiger to the squad. In addition, he has given a first call-up to Tim Kleindienst, a 29-year-old striker from Borussia Moenchengladbach, who is stepping in for the injured West Ham forward Niclas Füllkrug. The coach is making strategic selections, continuing his approach of prioritizing players based on their current form rather than past reputations.
Ter Stegen sustained a knee injury while playing for Barcelona in September, leaving a gap in the team's lineup. Nagelsmann has confirmed that Baumann, who was first called up in 2020 but has yet to make his international debut, will start in both fixtures. He firmly stated, "He's our No. 1, and it'll stay that way," dismissing speculation about sharing duties with Stuttgart's Alexander Nübel.
With this selection, Nagelsmann has opted to exclude players like Leon Goretzka from Bayern Munich and Karim Adeyemi from Borussia Dortmund, despite Adeyemi's impressive recent performance of ten goals in seven matches. Additionally, Emre Can and Maximilian Beier from Dortmund will also miss out, as the team prepares for the upcoming matches in the Nations League.
