Bassey, Murphy, Man Utd, Villa stars in BBC TOTW

Fulham’s Calvin Bassey and Newcastle United’s Jacob Murphy have earned well-deserved spots in the BBC Premier League Team of the Week, following impressive performances in the most recent round of matches. Former Watford striker Troy Deeney selected both players for their standout displays, with Bassey representing Nigeria and Murphy reportedly on the radar of the Nigerian national team.


Bassey delivered a commanding defensive performance, effectively neutralizing Liverpool’s star forward Mohamed Salah. His efforts have drawn praise, with many suggesting he’s developing into a top-tier centre-back capable of competing with the best in the Premier League.


Jacob Murphy, meanwhile, was the star performer for Newcastle United as they defeated Leicester City 3-0 away from home. The winger scored twice, continuing his strong form against one of his preferred opponents in the league.


Troy Deeney’s Team of the Week features players from eight Premier League clubs: Brentford, Crystal Palace, Fulham, Manchester United, Aston Villa, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Newcastle United, and Bournemouth. Fulham, Wolves, and Aston Villa each have two players represented in the lineup.


In defense, Brentford’s goalkeeper is supported by a backline comprising Daniel Muñoz (Crystal Palace), Calvin Bassey (Fulham), and Noussair Mazraoui (Manchester United), forming a solid defensive unit.


The midfield trio includes Youri Tielemans and Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, alongside Joao Gomes of Wolves. Up front, the attacking quartet features Jacob Murphy (Newcastle United), Ryan Sessegnon (Fulham), Evanilson (Bournemouth), and Jorgen Strand Larsen (Wolves).


Troy Deeney described Bassey and Murphy as “excellent,” praising the Fulham defender as his team’s best player. Speaking on Murphy’s impact, Deeney remarked that the winger’s consistent performances have flown under the radar, yet he remains one of the most dependable players in the Premier League this season.
