Barcelona: UEFA Investigates Spanish Club for Payments to Former Referees' Officials

Posted : 11 April 2023
Spanish giants from La Liga are involved in the Negreira case. Barcelona has advanced after the official announcement that UEFA, the continent's governing body, will be looking into the matter.

Although Barcelona has been charged by the public prosecutor's office, the club rejects all accusations. Indicted along with Negreira are former Barca presidents Josep Maria Bartomeu and Sandro Rosell.

Payments made by Barcelona to a former vice-president of Spain's referees committee are being looked into by UEFA.

The Spanish club allegedly paid Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira and his Dasnil 95 company over €7 million, according to prosecutors. As part of its probe, European football's governing body has appointed ethics and disciplinary inspectors.

The UEFA statement read: "Ethics and disciplinary inspectors have been appointed to conduct an investigation regarding a potential violation of UEFA's legal framework by FC Barcelona in connection with the so-called 'Caso Negreira'."
That came after a statement from the public defender's office that read: "FC Barcelona obtained and maintained a strictly confidential verbal agreement with Jose Maria

Enriquez Negreira so that, in his capacity as vice-president of the technical arbitral committee (CTA) and in exchange for money, the latter carries out actions tending to benefit FC Barcelona in decisions by the referees."

Barcelona refers to the business as "an external technical consultant" who has been tasked with creating video reports on referees in order to complement the knowledge requested by the coaching staff.

Barcelona denied wrongdoing but admits that Dasnil 95 received payments between 2001 and 2018.
